On Monday January 17, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s tremendous legacy, remember his dream and rededicate ourselves to honoring both—on our platform and in our own lives. As part of that commitment, we’ve rounded up a few ways to celebrate Dr. King, at home.
Outschool’s Offerings
Outschool is one of our favorite Zoom classes for kids. For MLK Day, they have over a dozen options, from a Circle Time for 3-6 year olds and Read Aloud for 3-8 year olds to a Be the Change discussion class about social justice, for high school students. Outschool teachers are always engaging, trained and in this case, will help you and your child remember the true meaning of this day.
New Haven Museum Virtual Programming
Log on for a lineup of family-friendly programming starting at 10 am EST, including storytelling, an interactive dance performance and a painting activity, presented in partnership with the Yale Peabody Museum.
Read a New Book
Scholastic has a great list of books that tell the story of Dr. King’s legacy, from Picture Books to Early Readers and books for older kids. Order them or download to read today.
Do An Act of Service
Since 1983, MLK Day has been a federal holiday, and in 1994, Congress designated it a Day Of Service to encourage people to honor Dr. King by working together to solve problems within our communities. Introduce your child to giving back in an age appropriate way, for instance, putting together a bag of clothes for people who don’t have with a young child, or choosing a new volunteer opportunity with an older child.
Talk About Race
Happy Toddler Playtime has a wonderful list of Anti-Racism activities that cover a wide range of ages and mediums, from reading a story with a Black or Brown lead character and talking about it, to simple crafts.
