Sara Gretzky is a podcast host who lives in Florida with her two daughters (Sicily, 3 and Vienna, 15 months), and her husband Ty. “Even on rainy days we will load up in the car for a “beach drive” just to drive down the coast and look out the window. I am super grateful we live somewhere my kids are able to be outside all year round—it’s so good for them,” says Sara.
After marrying into hockey royalty—her husband’s father is NHL legend Wayne Gretzky—and beginning to grow their family, Sara suffered a miscarriage and experienced what she calls being “in a very low place.” She decided to launch Causing a Scene as an outlet during that time in her life, and the pop culture podcast has been a hit for four years now. “Our listeners find us relatable, unhinged, and authentic, whether we’re discussing what’s on Bravo or what’s going on in our real lives,” says Sara.

You’re in the thick of little kids—what keeps you sane on hectic days?
With time and 2 under 2 at one point, I have learned I don’t do well when, just like kids, I am overstimulated. So I make a conscious effort that TVs are off most of the day and even when I get a moment to myself it’s usually to do chores in silence or sit on my porch. Sometimes we can feel like we’re going 100 MPH. I read a lot of self-help books and one common theme is to always be present or find something in a moment that brings you back down to earth. That has really helped.
Do you have a beauty product you love?
I try to wake up earlier than the girls everyday so I can wash my face, brush my teeth and put on Patchology eye masks; it helps me wake up and I feel better if I’m able to do all of those things before the chaos of the morning starts.
You always look put together. What’s your “mom uniform?”
I’ve always been a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. I wear a lot of jewelry so that dresses it up on days where I need it. I also love Free People sets and the occasional Lululemon black legging.
On days where I’m in a rush, its usually a workout set or workout dress with tennis shoes, but I always try to throw on an Abercrombie and Fitch or Zara button down to give the “workout look” an elevated twist.

Has anything surprised you about motherhood?
All of it and none of it at the same time. I recently read an article that said a woman’s brain completely shifts when she’s had kids and I think that’s the best way to put it. There are days I doubt myself and I’ve realized that doesn’t do anything for me or my kids. Being 100% confident and certain in yourself and your decisions as a mom doesn’t come easy but it will benefit you and your children. Once I stopped getting mad at myself for things I did or didn’t do and allowed myself grace while learning this song and dance of mothering, I felt that I was able to mentally be more present, calm, and patient. The community has also surprised me, it’s amazing to see moms helping moms in the wild or on the internet.
Your husband comes from hockey royalty—are your daughters playing hockey or other sports?
Sports is a huge part of our family. Ty and I grew up competing very seriously in our sports so we will be there to drive, cheer and watch every sport they want to do. I have tried to veto the hockey talk because the sport terrifies me, haha! They don’t really understand the impact their grandpa had on the sport yet, but I look forward to my husband explaining it to them one day. It’s so special and right now they know “papa played hockey” but I’m not sure they know how wel`1l he played!
My husband is a little pushier to get them both on skates but I understand why; it’s so important to him. He loves hockey, he grew up around it and so he wants that for them. He was skating before he could walk and some of the most emotional moments for him as a dad have been when he’s on the ice with the girls—I know how happy it makes him.
Right now, ballet is a huge part of my 2-year-old’s life. She also loves playing soccer outside with my husband. We recently went to Disney on Ice and she’s obsessed with figure skating, so that may be my husband’s way to get her to love the ice. Sports or not, we will always support and do what we can to help them succeed, but I also want them to be confident in themselves to succeed. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that you can’t force greatness. The kids have to want it, so I will always follow their lead. Now that being said, of course I would love to see the Gretzky Girls at the Olympics one day—we will see! If it’s at the ice rink or on Broadway, I will be front row.
