Camp Weequahic Hero

Camp Description

Described as the ‘most traditional’ of the choice-based camps, Camp Weequahic has created a community that brings out the best in girls and boys since 1953. Deep traditions, a choice-based program that actually helps to builds community and a fantastic staff that help foster the ideas of gratitude, attitude and courage in our kids – that is how we help parents build good humans.

FAQs About This Camp

How does your choice-based program build community?
First off, our campers spend more time in a day with their bunkmates (all of whom are the same age and gender) than they do apart. One bunk activity a day, all of their meals, rest hour, evening activities, etc…. They build a lot of connections this way. AND… when our campers enjoy the activities they’ve picked, they do so with other kids in their same age group and gender. Each camper is a bit happier doing the things they like and exploring new options with kids in their same age group. And, a little separation can be a really good thing!
Why did you pick Gratitude, Attitude and Courage as your values?
We believe camp is a unique opportunity to build good humans. We also believe in the power of a diverse group of kids and staff. So, we needed something that would both bind us all together and pull us towards our best selves. Practicing gratitude makes everything better. Realizing you can control the space between ‘stimulus’ and ‘response’ is a super power. Courage? Well… you can’t practice any other value without it.
Who is the kid that does 'best' at Weequahic?
The one who engages! We have a thriving sports community. (Kate and Cole both played D1 athletics and their middle son is playing D1 football.) AND… there are no try outs. If you want to play, let’s go! We have a huge Arts program (Cole’s mom ran his high school arts program.) Theater, fashion design, cooking, stained glass, robotics and so much more. Our adventure program is pretty old school – archery, marksmanship, Camper vs. Wild, Back country cooking, high ropes and climbing. And the lake and pool? Two of our most popular spots. (Plus, our ‘color wars’ in each half of the summer include competitions in everything we do!) So, it doesn’t matter what you love or want to explore – as long as you engage, you’ll have a blast!
