Camp Description

Island Lake Camp’s philosophy of individualized programming allows campers to pursue their own interests within a structured program. Offering over 90 activities, ILC is about choice so campers can find and do what they love. They will also meet campers, outside of their bunk, who have similar interests and this only expands camp connections and friendships. Our program drives a very inclusive camp culture that is kind, down to earth and allows campers to truly be themselves. Under the supervision of our highly-qualified and supportive staff, campers experience the excitement of challenge and the satisfaction of success. Camper interests are explored and at the same time campers are encouraged to try new things and step out of their comfort zone. Campers gain the confidence that comes with the mastery of skills all while having fun with friends.

FAQs About This Camp

Does a choice camp provide a strong bunk experience and offer many of the typical camp activities that we associate with camp?
Yes! Living among peers, campers at Island Lake have a bunk experience and they are with the kids in their bunk for at least 6 hours a day. They eat meals with their bunk, have rest hour with their bunk and do evening activities with their bunk. The opportunity to make friends at camp is very strong because in addition to the experiences campers have with the kids in their bunk, they also have experiences with the kids they might meet at their activities. Often times there are some kids from their bunk at some of their programming activities because we try to bunk kids with similar interests together, but they are not limited to the kids in their bunk. In addition to choosing their activities, ILC offers everything campers are looking for in a camp experience from evening activities, special events, traditions, campfires, color war and trip days.
Describe the program in greater detail including what is a camper's daily schedule like and what program areas are offered?
Campers have personalized schedules of “majors” and “minors”. Every activity day consists of three majors and three minors. Each session campers choose their three majors, the activities they are most interested in, and spend an hour a day in each major area. Campers pick their majors before camp (this helps us with planning and staffing and also allows us to get to know our campers) but can make changes if need be once they are at camp. The instruction is geared to interests, needs, and talents. Every day at lunch campers choose their three minors for the following day, allowing campers the opportunity to try a variety of different things and discover new interests. And sometimes friends or a bunk will decide to do an activity together.

We offer over 90 activities in our incredible facilities that allow campers to continually improve in their activities throughout the years. We have an extensive circus program, on-site horseback, one of the largest skateparks in camping, an incredibly strong theater program complete with theater tech and a very strong outdoor adventure program. Other activities include arts, sports and fitness, music, media, STEM, cooking, swim, boating, waterskiing, golf, dance, mountain biking, gymnastics, an impressive magic program and others. In the last few years we added a spin studio that our older campers have enjoyed and renovated the majority of our camp facilities including bunks and program spaces.

What kind of kid does well at Island Lake Camp?
Kids that like the idea of choice (pursuing their own interests within a structured program) and having fun will flourish at Island Lake. They may already know what they love to do or want to try different things to figure out what their passion is- either works at Island Lake. There are kids who love to be playing sports and kids who love to create and be active. Creativity has no limit with circus, fine arts, dance, music and theater. There are kids that love to cook, explore media or ride horses. Kids that love outdoor adventure, waterfront and STEM. Nice kids who love being part of a camp community will do well at Island Lake Camp.

And while kids have the independence to choose activities, they do have support and guidance when necessary (especially for our young campers). We can help them select minors and assure that they do not get overwhelmed by choice- choice is truly for everyone.
