Camps Baco & Che-Na-Wah Hero

Camp Description

Camp Baco for Boys and Camp Che-Na-Wah for Girls is camp at its purest. We’re two separate camps built on a single tradition: the secret to great camp is its people.

The Wortman family has had the privilege to manage and then own both camps with love and care for generations. We believe that camp at its best is a series of magical moments that emerge from the backdrop that we supply. We provide the unspoiled setting, expert instruction, and careful supervision, the safety and structure for campers. We share the legends, traditions and values that have infused camp spirit from the start. We challenge, teach, nurture and cheer campers on, then we watch them soar.

We are a community that is special among camps. Every year, 95% of our campers return for another spectacular summer; and new campers receive a warm and special welcome. With our team sports, swimming, tennis, the performing arts, and more, at Camps Baco and Che-Na-Wah, campers will have endless opportunities to do what they love and try new things, too!

Where times have changed, Camps Baco and Che-Na-Wah – and what kids get out of camp – remains refreshingly constant: children play all day, learn new skills, challenge themselves, make lots of new friends, explore their own potential and, most importantly, HAVE FUN!

FAQs About This Camp

When do the boys and girls get together?
Baco boys and Che-Na-Wah girls enjoy numerous age appropriate activities together throughout the summer to share in camp spirit. These include special evening activities such as capture-the-flag games and campfires. Campers gather together for camp special events such as our Fourth of July celebration and talent show, the Baco/Che-Na-Wah charity bazaar and our end-of-summer dance with a DJ. Senior campers also enjoy participating in our co-ed musical theater program; we produce two co-ed shows each summer. Brother/sister visiting is weekly on Saturdays, and also includes cousins/family/neighbors/family friends.
What does a Baco/Che-Na-Wah camper look like?
None of the Baco/Che-Na-Wah campers fit one mold. We encourage every child to purse their interests, while being a part of the strong camp community. They will get to try every activity with their age group through our structured schedule, which allows them to learn new skills, and develop strong bonds with their bunk. They will also have time to focus on their favorite activities through an elective program, and daily free play.
Where do your staff come from?
More than 80% of our bunk staff, and 98% of Senior Staff, grew up at Baco/Che-Na-Wah. We are so proud of the leadership training programs that we have developed to allow campers to easily transition to become staff directly from completing their camper summers. This program is incredibly unique within the camp community, and truly fuels a spirit in camp that isn’t replicated anywhere else.
