Mom fashion can be tricky. It needs to be as comfortable as it is chic. Before you buy a single new item for your wardrobe, you’ve got to break up with the outdated, unflattering clothes that are bursting out of your drawers and closet. That’s the advice from fashion expert Amy Guzzi, a Connecticut-based mom and fashion influencer behind The Stylist Effect.

Amy suggests starting by ditching what’s stretched out, faded, and not bringing you joy. “If it is trendy and you haven’t worn it in a few years, get rid of it,” says Amy. Then, replace them with quality, tailored pieces. Says Amy: “I tell everyone to try to invest in beautiful, classic pieces that you will have forever.”

After all, our kids are likely going to school in the latest fashion-whether it’s the more expensive version or the Amazon dupe-yet we’re still wearing dingy, ill-fitting pieces from years ago (sigh). Think of this wardrobe upgrade as a form of self-care, helping you look and feel more confident!

Here are Amy’s three categories to take your tired wardrobe into 2024 and beyond—with specific picks she’s loving, in stores now.

1. Get a quality t-shirt.

A more structured t-shirt is in now and definitely a closet staple. I love the perfect vintage tee from Madewell. It is the perfect length and is both comfortable and affordable.

2. Find the right jean shape.

For jeans, I love a good straight leg or slightly oversized option. If it is too baggy, I think it looks messy.

For affordable jeans, I love anything from Madewell and GAP

If you’re going more expensive, I like SILVERLAKE, AGOLDE and these from Citizens of Humanity

3. Opt for an oversized blazer

Oversized is definitely more casual and fitted is more elegant and sophisticated. Everything oversized is the trend right now but I only like it slightly oversized so it doesn’t look too sloppy. It should hang just slightly off your shoulders and hit right below the hip, like this favorite from Mango
