Spring cleaning can feel like a daunting task. Tackle one project at a time and focus on seasonal de-cluttering. Some easy tips and tricks below.
Windows and Window Treatments
When washing windows, choose a cloudy day so they don’t dry too quickly and streak. Simply use water and a micro-fiber cloth. No need for harsh chemicals!
If your window treatments need a pick-me-up, go over them with the upholstery attachment on your vacuum, spritz with some fabric freshener and toss them in the dryer on low. Hang back up immediately when done.
Screens can easily be cleaned with a scrap piece of carpeting.
Kitchen
Take the kitchen trash and recycle bin into the shower or outside for a good scrub and rinse.
Replace old sponges.
Take shelves and drawers out of the fridge and wash them in the sink with dish soap and water. Spray the inside of the fridge with a solution of vinegar and water and let soiled areas soak. Wipe clean with a rag, dry shelves and drawers and return everything to the fridge.
Bedrooms
Professionally clean or air-out bed pillows. Either hang pillows outside in the fresh air or, if they fit, put them in the dryer on a no-heat cycle. Rotate and flip mattresses, wash blankets and comforters before storing them. Wash mattress pads and bed skirts.
Bathrooms
Do a deep-dive into the bathrooms. Wash mats and shower curtains, freshen towels and deep-clean the shower, tub, toilet and sinks. Safely discard any expired items.
Closets
Make a wardrobe transition. Move jackets, boots, gloves and heavy sweaters into storage. Label clearly. See our post on transitioning to a Spring wardrobe here.
De-clutter and organize mud rooms as well as hallway or linen closets by putting away seasonal items, heavy sheets, comforters and extra blankets. Make room for lighter linens, beach towels, and other Spring/Summer essentials.
Garage
Store seasonal items like shovels, scrapers and snowblowers at the start of Spring. Consider servicing any machines before storing them so they are in optimal shape when you pull them back out. Bring out garden tools, potting supplies and kids gear (bikes, helmets, games, etc.) for easy access.
